How to improve operational efficiency with iTHERM SurfaceLine TM611

Temperature is a critical parameter in the chemical industry, directly influencing both safety and productivity. To ensure consistent quality and compliance, frequent calibration of thermometers is essential. In a chemical plant, flow indication at batch start-up relies on surface-mounted thermometers installed with insulation to ensure accurate readings regardless of ambient conditions.

The challenge

Cable-probe designs are long and mounted directly onto the pipe surface, making recalibration labor-intensive: the insulation must be removed, the long probe handled and reinstalled, and the insulation reapplied. This complexity poses a significant challenge in a task of such importance. However, slurry viscosity varies during heating, making accurate temperature measurement difficult. Conventional sensors often fail to respond quickly or withstand the harsh environment, leading to inefficiencies, safety risks, and reduced metal recovery.

Our solution

To address this challenge, a chemical manufacturing site in Northern Europe collaborated with Endress+Hauser during the development of iTHERM SurfaceLine TM611. The non-invasive thermometer was tested under real process conditions and significantly reduced calibration time and effort.
