Publication date: 16.12.2020

“We require our partners to commit to our values and high-quality operations. Other preconditions include cutting-edge technical solutions and understanding of the needs of our production. Endress+Hauser meets all these requirements and we are happy to continue our collaboration. In Kemi, we are well equipped to succeed in building a modern and reliable bioproduct mill to serve us for decades to come,” says Jari-Pekka Johansson, Project Director, Kemi bioproduct mill, Metsä Fibre.

According to the preliminary agreement, Endress+Hauser will supply the field devices to all process areas in the new mill planned by Metsä Fibre. The agreement covers all flow, pressure, differential pressure and level measurements as well as liquid analysis. The total order will be the largest field device order Endress+Hauser has received in Finland.

Endress+Hauser’s innovative process technology and field automation solutions, together with the Internet of Things and digital field management, enable optimal functionality. In addition, high-quality project management with both remote and on-site support will help ensure the practicability of measurement points, optimize installed devices and ensure flexible process commissioning and equipment maintenance.

“To optimize production reliability and performance, accurate and reliable measurements are required for each measurement point in the process. Our strong process measurement technology and project expertise as well as our field device solutions enable these requirements to be met,” says Tuomo Saukkonen, Managing Director, Endress+Hauser Oy.

With a planned lifecycle of 30 to 40 years, the construction of the new bioproduct mill will begin after the investment decision. According to Metsä Fibre, the investment decision will be made in the beginning of 2021 at the earliest, after the environmental permit is secured and other investment decision criteria are met.

The starting points for designing the new bioproduct mill in Kemi are for totally fossil free operations and self-sufficiency in electricity. The new bioproduct mill will produce 1.5 million tons of pulp per year and numerous other bioproducts.

“It is great to be involved in building sustainable bio-production together with Metsä Fibre and thus further strengthen our long-term cooperation,” Tuomo Saukkonen adds.

Among other projects, Metsä Fibre and Endress+Hauser collaborated in the extensive field device delivery by Endress+Hauser to the Äänekoski bioproduct mill in 2016 to 2017.
