Endress+Hauser supplies instruments to HSY’s new wastewater treatment plan

High-quality measurements ensure water purity and minimize the environmental impact on the Baltic Sea

Publication date: 04.05.2022

Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY is building a new wastewater treatment plant in Blominmäki, Espoo. The new plant will replace the current Suomenoja wastewater treatment plant in 2022. When completed, the plant will have the capacity to treat the wastewater generated by 400,000 residents in the Capital Region.

“It will be the most efficient and reliable wastewater treatment plant in the Nordic countries. The exceptional location of the plant, which is excavated into rock, affected the planning and implementation of the demanding purification process, which also required customized solutions,” says Project Manager Timo Jalonen from HSY.

Endress+Hauser’s cooperation with HSY and Valmet, which is in charge of the automation and instrumentation contract, kicked off in 2017. As the supplier of the field equipment, Endress+Hauser has been in charge of the thousands of measurements on site throughout the process.

“With our references, we succeeded in convincing HSY and Valmet of our expertise in field automation,” state Jeremias Trogen, Team Leader of the Endress+Hauser sales team, and Riku Laitinen, Product Manager responsible for Endress+Hauser’s analysis products. Laitinen gives a special mention to the fact that Endress+Hauser’s analyzers consume very little chemicals when taking measurements, which delivers cost savings while also reducing the load on the environment.

Efficiency and the environment as priorities at the plant

The reliability of measurements is of the utmost importance at the Blominmäki plant, as the water treated by the plant is ultimately discharged into the sea. An optimal process run reduces the nutrient loading caused to the Baltic Sea.

“The quality requirements of the environmental health authorities monitoring the operation of wastewater treatment plants are very high, in addition to which we have set our own ambitious environmental targets for the new plant. Endress+Hauser’s high-quality measurements allow us to meet these requirements by technical means,” praises Jalonen from HSY.

Endress+Hauser has decades of experience in water and wastewater industry projects both in Finland and around the world. The requirements of the plant environment are taken into account in the equipment properties.

“Endress+Hauser’s Memosens technology is an excellent choice for sites like Blominmäki because the sensor can be calibrated in a safe and clean environment instead of an unhygienic measuring point,” says Project Manager Tapio Vesiluoma from Endress+Hauser.

“In addition to reliable and high-quality technology, Endress+Hauser has been able to provide valuable insight into functional equipment choices in challenging situations,” adds Project Engineer Petri Samppala from Valmet.

The cooperation will continue to support in commissioning

Despite the logistical challenges and material shortage caused by the pandemic, Endress+Hauser has maintained its first-rate security of supply. Work will commence at the new plant toward the end of this year.

Vesiluoma says that a successful outcome will be achieved through excellent cooperation between Endress+Hauser’s sales team, logistics team and factories as well as HSY and Valmet. After delivering the equipment, Endress+Hauser will continue providing support during the commissioning of the Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant.

“This is to make sure that all of the installations have been completed properly and that the service staff are familiar with the equipment. Continuing this support after the plant has been put into service is also an option,” says Vesiluoma.
